I can say that for the first time in a really long time I'm considering leaving Opera.  I've been using it a few hours so far and it's definately good.

What are your thoughts?

DarkKanigit,

I'm recommending Kaspersky over Nod32 these days, but that just means NOD32 is #2 instead of #1. KAV seems to have fixed their resource issues and I've seen NOD32 fail with two trojans on client machines that KAV killed.

I'm a HUGE NOD32 fan and if people are using anything other than NOD32 or KAV, then they are essentially unprotected. Everything else is mediocre (freeware like AVG) or worse (Norton). But you might want to check out the latest KAV before recommending NOD32 anymore.

Just a friendly FYI.

:}

PS IMHO IE6 < FF2 < IE7 < FF3beta which might just be < IE8beta2 (too close to call this race yet). I use the latest versions of both browsers, depending on which sites I am visiting, since both fail in different regards with different sites.

Nice post...agree with you about KAV, and saw something like that on PCWorld (methinks)

I know you're smart....wanna know how? You spell just like Zubaz!

DarkKanigit,

Nice to end on a happier note. Anyone ever notice how Zubaz makes it into every thread?

Your opinion, and nothing more.

Agreed, how ridiculous. I use AVG pro and am quite protected. Not to mention I'm not a n00b when it comes to safe browsing habits.

I don't use protection.

funny in 3 years i've never used anything other than AVG and a couple other free versions of anti virus and firewalls and have never once had a virus or had my identity stolen. I must be special.

But would you ever know?...

It's Bitdefender for me.  Nothing beats the reality of actually talking one-on-one with a dev on MSN when I did have a problem with it. [caused by an anti-spyware app]...

since in the past I have had viruses that got past Norton, Trend, and McAfee(all at different times) and knew it (unfortunately to late. Thank you crap av scanners.) I'd have to say yes.

I'll worry about my PCs security once I start getting senile and doing stuff like 'running two software firewalls to be more secure' and telling people I have 4 megabytes of RAM.

Owait, that's my dad.  Hmm.  He used to be computer savvy...now I guess he's just too into gardening or whatever the heck he does with his time.

Ahem anyway, you guys might not be so amused to know how many hotels I've worked at that did not even have their antivirus up to date.  One of them the managers even got pissed when I updated it so that it'd actually work.

That was extremely high on my WTF meter.  All managers that deal with credit information should be REQUIRED to take security classes...you want to know why you keep hearing about big chains losing millions of CC info?  Easy.  They most likely don't even bother putting a password on the account, use incredibly stupid passwords on their 'secure' asset transmission pages and programs, and probably don't know what a computer is beside the thing that displays the pretty pictures.  Ugh.

The bottom line there is...if you EVER hear a front desk person complain about the lacking computer security, bitch at the company.  You don't need to have an insecure PC to lose your credit card info...you just need a retarded business to do it for you.

I have recently downloaded and installed IE 8.. I totally gave up IE 7 for Firefox. Firefox is my Fav internet browser. I have to say though that IE 8 loads faster and seems much better than IE 7.I still think that of Safari, IE 8 , Opera 9.5 and Firefox 3.1, that Firefox 3.1 is still my fav browser. I am more willing to try out and test run IE more now though with IE 8. Oh and to point out I am running mycolors Gloss Burgundy and IE 8 run fine now.To each their own though and I still think Firefox will still be my fav Good browsing all Anne

me too since FF3 came out i havent looked back....

I'm talking about people who don't have safe browsing habits. Honestly, people who don't use the internet at all are the safest, hehe. But the point is to be protected no matter what you do, where you go, or who happens to have cracked which OS security hole this week.

As a consultant for the senior brass at both MS and Apple, I use all three major OSs deliberately venturing anywhere and everywhere in order to test under worst case scenarios.

So while I'm glad you are a safe browser, I think that has more to do with your current level of safety than anything by AVG (though the latest versions are MUCH better than they used to be). In all honesty, I haven't seen a modern rootkit that couldn't easily get past AVG without even breaking a sweat.

If you were just an average internet user with no knowledge of safe browsing habits, I'd bet cash money that you're a rootkit zombie and didn't even know it...and I'd win my bet.

So my recommendation of #1 and #2 AV programs is so you don't have to be a safe browser. Fair enough?

Aaah...another long, abusive thread.

*Pixeleo leans against a tree, sighing as he sees fellow humans engaged in educative and instructive argument, benefiting none*

*At last, he stands up and says:

So, I use Firefox too. And the last thing I wanted to do is tell other people that IE is bad.
People call Mac-lovers fanboys because they trash talk Windows-users.
People who trash talk IE will be called FF fanboys.
Do you honestly want to be called that?

*Pixeleo sneaks away before someone turns their head and sees him*
